Abdud SELIM

Rabiul Alam was born in Bogura on 3 November, 1946.
He graduated in Chemical Engineering from BUET, Dhaka and obtained diploma in Chemical Fertilizer from GIAP, Moscow.
He served in 3 Chemical Industries (TSP Fertilizer Complex, Unilever Bangladesh Limited & Kohinoor Chemical) for total 35 years and took retirement from professional life.
His first play (Barshankat) was staged at his village home, while he was 19. After moving to his workplace in Chattogram, he started producing annual dramas in his organization, in which he appeared as an actor and there after a playwright (Athocho Andhokar). He formed Tijak Nattya Goshthi in 1974 and became deeply attached into theater. In addition to it’s first production (Jananeer Mrityu Chai) he wrote four more original plays (Shamapti Onnorakam, Akankhito Ekjon, Kakhono Shaikate, Bipokhey Bonduk), adapted 2 stories (Abu Rushd’s Sharee Baree Garee, Michail Schedrin’s Ek Je Chilo Dui Huzur) and translated Shakespeare’s As You Like It for the group. He directed most of these plays.
Outside Tirjak he wrote & directed for Thesos (Raja Shahitya Karkhana), Natyaproyash (Nishongo Niramoy), TriTaranga Nattyadal (Bibi Pathshala- Moliere’s School for Wives) and NattyaMancha Repertory (Alo Niruttor- Shucharit Chowdhury’ story).
His plays have been produced by several groups across the country, of which most notable are: Rajshahi Shanshkritik Shangha (Shamapti Onnorakam), Bogura Nattya Goshthi (Aro Ekjon Rabeya), Ambition Theater (Chalanbeele Kalanka and Mishar Kirti), Motijheel Theater (Nishongo Niramoy and Bibi Bittanto) and Nattya Tirtho (Chalanbeel and Kankal- Tagore’s story). Bangladesh Theater Toronto, Canada has produced his 2 adaptations (Kankal, Ek Je Chili Dui Huzur).
Rabiul successfully initiated theater performance outside the group theater arena. Institution of Engineers produced his Napush and Napush Abar in their National Conventions in 1982 & 1995. Chittagong Club is a regular producer of his plays since 1999. During the last 27 years he directed 15 plays for the club, of which 6 were premiered here (Akash Parer Agontuk, Ulto Fande).

(Jar Shathe Jar, Mofizon- Mahbub-ul-Alam’s Novel, Vondo Huzur- Moliere’s Tartuffe, Jeener Badsha- Kazi Nazul’s story). All these plays (except one) were either written or adapted by him. As of now, Chittagong Club is the main dramatic workplace for him.
In addition to his own plays, Rabiul directed 3 famous plays worth mentioning- Munir Chowdhury’s Kabor (Tirjak), Bidhayak Bhattacharyya’s Bish Baschar Aage (TSP) and Munir Chowdhury’s adaptation of Bernard Shaw’s play Keu Kischu Bolte Parena (Chittagong Club).
His Shamapti Onnorakam, As You Like It and Kankal participated in National Drama Festivals, Raja Shahitya Karkhana in weeklong drama festival of Shilpakala Academy and Napush in BeNaNashi Sh National Festival.
He edited a drama quarterly Tirjak during seventies, in which 30 contemporary plays were published in it’s 12 issues. Tirjak also published 7 books of 4 playwrights during the same period.
Until now, Rabiul’s 27 plays have been collected in 4 volumes (Nattya Shamagro 1, 2 & 3- by Adorn Publication and Natak- by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy). Bangla Academy published his Nirbachito Natak (collection of 7 original plays), As You Like It (translation of Shakespeare) and Bibi Pathshala (Adaptation of Molliere’s School for Wives). Adorn published his translation Harold Pinterer Charti Natak (Birthday Party, A Slight Ache, Dumb Waiter & Homecoming). Shishu Academy has published his 2 plays- Akash Parer Agontuk and Kishor Kazir Bichar.
In addition to plays he has 3 books of short stories (Shilur Chokh, Achinpur, Adday Rashvango) and 2 short novels (Shomoy Ashomoy, Shei Pahare) to his credit.
He is a dramatist, artist & guest producer in Bangladesh Betar and a dramatist & artist in Bangladesh Television.
Rabiul Alam is honored by several socio-cultural-dramatic organizations including Chattogram Shilpakala Academy (2017) and received Bangla Academy Literary Award (2020) for his contribution to theater.
He is a Fellow of Bangla Academy, Life Member of Institution of Engineers, Member of ITI and Permanent Member of Chittagong Club Ltd.
